Solicitor's Office launches internship program

BLUFFTON – The Fourteenth Circuit Solicitor’s Office officially launched its externship program on Tuesday, May 29, the first of its kind in South Carolina.

This innovative program for rising third-year law students will allow them to gain valuable courtroom experience as they assist us with all aspects of criminal prosecution. The students, along with their attorney mentors, will work real cases from arrest to final disposition. They will assist in General Sessions Court and, under the student practice rule, will be able to prosecute cases in Magistrate’s Court.

While the program clearly benefits the students, it also enables the Solicitor’s Office to see promising law students in action. This helps us to identify candidates for future employment, especially those who want to become career prosecutors, in a much more comprehensive manner than a traditional job interview.

The first class of interns includes three law school students, one from the Charleston School of Law and two from the University of South Carolina School of Law. We wish them the best in what will undoubtedly be a memorable summer.

The Island Packet reported on our intern program. You can read the article here.
