Former teacher sentenced to prison
BEAUFORT – A 24-year-old former Spanish teacher at Hilton Head Island High School was sentenced to up to six years in prison on Thursday, August 28, 2014.
Margaret LaMantia pleaded guilty as charged to contributing to the delinquency of a minor and disseminating harmful material to a minor.
On December 10, 2013, a 16-year-old boy told his father that he had bought marijuana at the request of his teacher and that she had sent him a provocative photograph. While being questioned by detectives, LaMantia confessed.
Judge Brooks Goldsmith sentenced LaMantia to a youthful offender sentence, which is an indeterminate sentence of up to six years in the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
Assistant solicitor Patrick Hall, who prosecuted the case, stated, “Not only is she going to prison, but these convictions should ensure that she never works around children again.”
