Colleton County man sentenced to 30 years for voluntary manslaughter

2015-06-25

WALTERBORO, SC (June 25, 2015) – A jury found  a 27-year-old Colleton County man guilty Thursday of shooting and killing another man and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Jurors convicted Tequan L. Brown of voluntary manslaughter, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and obstruction of justice for the Nov. 20, 2013, shooting death of Maurice Kemp outside of 22 Brights Court in Walterboro.

Judge Perry Buckner handed down the following sentence:

·         Voluntary manslaughter – 25 years

·         Possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime – 5 years (to be served consecutively)

·         Obstruction of justice - 10 years (to be served concurrently)

The case faced many hurdles, said Assistant Solicitor Tameaka Legette, a member of the Fourteenth Circuit Solicitor’s Office Career Criminal Prosecution Team. The primary witness in the case, Courtney "Coco" Boulware, died in a car crash in April 2015, and the defendant changed his story several times.

In the 2013 incident, Boulware went to the homes at Brights Court, following an argument with Kemp. Distraught, Kemp went to Brights Court in search of Boulware.  Kemp went to Brown’s home first, but soon discovered that Boulware was next door. As Kemp and Boulwares were leaving, Brown came out of his home, armed with a gun. An argument ensued and Brown began shooting. Kemp was shot and later died.

“When we lost the star witness, I was extraordinarily concerned about how we were to prosecute this case, however science was in our favor,” Legette said.  The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office investigation and SLED’s forensic analysis were instrumental in the prosecution of this case.”

Brown was previously convicted of the following charges:

·         2005 - breach of trust, two counts of forgery, obtaining signature under false pretenses

·         2008  - grand larceny

·         2011 - conspiracy to make and pass counterfeit checks
