Hardeeville man sentenced to 15 years for sexually assaulting child

2015-09-09

RIDGELAND – A 43-year-old Hardeeville man was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old child.

Juan Antonio Velasquez-Cruz pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

The child disclosed the assaults during a counseling session in 2014 and Velasquez-Cruz was subsequently arrested.

This has obviously been a difficult process for the victim and her family,” said the case’s prosecutor, Assistant Solicitor Alex Toporek. “We are pleased that justice was served and hope it can bring some closure to the family."

Upon serving a minimum of 85 percent of his sentence, Velesquez-Cruz will face mandatory deportation to El Salvador.

The case was prosecuted in front of Judge Carmen Mullen.
