Beaufort County man sentenced to life for murder of Pritchardville woman

2015-12-09

BEAUFORT, SC – A 43-year-old Beaufort County man pleaded guilty Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, to murder, armed robbery and burglary in the 2013 death of a Pritchardville woman.

Walter William Glass was sentenced to life in prison for killing 60-year-old Melanie Lowther on the morning of July 31, 2013 at her home-based business located at 2 Barefoot Alley.

Lowther and her husband, Barry, helped Glass by providing an unused camper and giving him odd jobs around their home and business. Glass was living in the camper at Stoney Crest Campground on May River Road at the time of the murder.

Glass beat the woman with a nail puller and stabbed her twice. He also stole rolled coins and a ring.

Solicitor Duffie Stone described the killing as vicious and one of the worst murders he's come across in his 30-year prosecutorial career.

The sentence was handed down by Circuit Court Judge Carmen Mullen.
