BEAUFORT, S.C. (June 27, 2025) — A Bluffton man has been sent to prison for his role in the shooting death of a popular Bluffton High School football.

Jayden Lamont Void, 23, pleaded guilty to all three charges against him Thursday and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. He received one year for third-degree assault and battery by mob, 12 years for second-degree mob violence, and 30 years — suspended to 12 — for first-degree mob violence. The sentences will run concurrently.

Void becomes the third person convicted in connection with the March 2021 killing of D’won “D.J.” Fields Jr., an 18-year-old standout football player at Bluffton High who was just weeks from graduation.

Void and his co-defendants are being prosecuted by 14th Circuit Solicitor Duffie Stone. Chief Deputy Solicitor Sean Thornton represented the state during Thursday’s proceedings.

“This was a fair sentence – proportionate to the defendant’s participation in this tragedy, as well as his degree of cooperation during the subsequent investigation and prosecution,” Thornton said.

Void had no prior criminal convictions. He testified against one of his co-defendants during a 2023 trial and was prepared to testify against a second before that defendant changed his plea to guilty the day his jury trial was to begin.

Two of Fields’ Bluffton High School teammates were riding in his vehicle and survived the attack. However, both were injured — one of them shot twice in the face.

In a case of mistaken identity, the victims were targeted by assailants in another vehicle who believed them to be their “opps” or “opposition” – rivals in a violent, on-going dispute. Void, who had no involvement in the prior disputes, happened to see Fields and his party at a Bluffton-area fast-food restaurant, mistaking one of them for the assailants’ target. Void then communicated with the assailants by cellphone, giving them the victims’ location and describing Fields’ vehicle as he drove away from the restaurant.

In October 2023, Ty’leic Dae Jhon Chaneyfield, now 23, was convicted of murder, two counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault and battery by mob, and possession of a weapon during commission of a violent crime. He was sentenced to life in prison and received the maximum sentence on five of the six remaining charges.

Jimmie Lewis Green of Hardeeville, now 23, pleaded guilty to the same charges in May 2023. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

A fourth defendant, Messiah Kasheef Anderson of Ridgeland, faces the same charges as Green and Chaneyfield. He was a juvenile at the time of the attack but is being prosecuted as an adult. Shayniah Void, Jayden Void’s sister, faces the same charges as her brother.

Both remaining defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
