A former Hilton Head Island woman who swindled thousands of dollars from four area golf courses while working as a financial officer has been sentenced.
Heather McLaurin Davis, 39, of Hillsborough, N.C., pleaded guilty Monday in General Sessions Court at the Beaufort County Courthouse to three counts of breach of trust with fraudulent intent more than $10,000. Davis was sentenced to four years in prison, followed by five years of probation. She must also repay $65,000 in restitution.
“This defendant completely violated her position of trust by pocketing tens of thousands of dollars over the course of six years,” Assistant Solicitor Francine Norz said.
A forensic audit showed Davis made unauthorized adjustments to member accounts and took those adjusted amounts from daily golf club cash collections, Norz said. Davis worked for the Heritage Golf Group, which oversees golf courses in Palmetto Hall, Port Royal, Shipyard and Hilton Head plantations.
Norz is a member of the Solicitor’s Office’s Special Victims Unit with a focus on prosecuting financial crimes. She has worked as a prosecutor since 2006.
