St. Helena Island woman convicted in child’s death

BEAUFORT, SC (Feb. 25, 2016) – A St. Helena Island woman was convicted today in a 2-year-old child’s death.

LaQuana Chere Chisholm, 28, pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful conduct toward a child in the 2014 death of Fhilicia Garry.

Chisholm was sentenced to 17 years in prison.

Chisholm told investigators she was exercising with a dumbbell when the child was struck on the head. The incident occurred at a Seaside Road home on St. Helena Island on March 4, 2014.

Deputy Solicitor Sean Thornton prosecuted the case.

Circuit Court Judge Michael Nettles handed down the sentence.
